Diagnosing A/C Systems : Superheat with a TEV

Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TEV) and Superheat:

  • Function: TEV maintains normal evaporator superheat under small load variations by adjusting refrigerant flow.
  • Limitations:
    • Low Load Conditions: TEV struggles to maintain superheat under low airflow conditions (e.g., dirty filter, evaporator, or blower wheel), leading to lower than normal superheat.
    • High Load Conditions: During high load scenarios (e.g., turning on the AC in a hot, humid space), the TEV may result in higher than normal superheat.
    • Low Refrigerant Charge: If the system is undercharged, TEV cannot maintain proper superheat as there isn't enough refrigerant to meet demand.

Measuring Superheat:

  • Evaporator Superheat:

    • Measured by taking the suction line temperature at the evaporator outlet, near the TEV bulb, and subtracting the evaporating temperature from it.
    • This measurement is crucial for assessing the efficiency of the evaporator coil.
  • Total Superheat:

    • Measured 6 inches from the compressor on the suction line or near the service port on an air conditioning condensing unit.
    • Total superheat considers the entire suction line and is important for evaluating the system's overall refrigerant charge and protecting the compressor.

Manufacturer Specifications:

  • Heatcraft (Evaporator Coil Manufacturer):
    • Recommends 10°F of evaporator superheat, focusing on evaporator efficiency.
  • Emerson (Compressor Manufacturer):
    • Recommends 20°F of total superheat, focusing on preventing floodback to protect the compressor.

Air Conditioning Manufacturers:

  • Often specify total superheat as an indicator of proper refrigerant charge.
  • Line Set Considerations:
    • Factory charge is typically sufficient for 15 to 25 feet of line set between indoor and outdoor units.
    • Adjust refrigerant charge based on the actual length of the line set:
      • Longer Line Set: Add more refrigerant.
      • Shorter Line Set: Remove some refrigerant.
    • Use a charging chart in conjunction with total superheat measurements for precise adjustments.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Understand the distinction between evaporator superheat and total superheat.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for superheat to ensure optimal system performance and compressor protection.
  • Regularly check and maintain proper airflow to avoid issues with superheat control.
