Aftermarket Motors) PSC Motors

  1. PSC Motors Overview:

    • Stands for Permanent Split Capacitor.
    • Split phase AC induction motor, also called an induction motor.
    • Uses a single run capacitor with winding for startup and operation.
  2. Components:

    • Run Winding: Connected directly to AC power.
    • Start Winding: Connected to power via the capacitor, causing a phase shift and creating a magnetic field to start the motor.
  3. Operation:

    • Voltage reaches run winding first, then travels through the capacitor to start winding.
    • Both windings stay connected to the circuit throughout the cycle, maintaining operation.
  4. Efficiency and Performance:

    • Designed for fixed horsepower.
    • Low efficiency, around 60%, due to energy loss as heat.
    • Speed and torque are fixed; efficiency drops with increased static pressure.
    • May run at constant full speed if static pressure is low.
  5. Applications:

    • Used in condenser fan motors, blower motors, and inducer motors.
  6. Power Matching:

    • Important to match the motor power to system needs for maximum efficiency.
    • Ratings include amperage and horsepower.
    • Horsepower used for calculating air flow; must be considered along with amperage.
    • Replacing motors: Match amperage, up to 25% more is acceptable.
  7. Advantages of PSC Motors:

    • Popular retrofit option due to simplicity and lack of programmability.
    • Universal compatibility with various equipment setups.
