Air Handling Units (AHUs) Overview:
AHUs ensure that the air entering the coils is filtered. Instead of one large filter, smaller filters are arranged in rows before the coil, similar to rooftop units.
Air Balance:
To maintain balance between indoor and outdoor air, some fresh air is introduced, and indoor air is exhausted. This is especially important in buildings like hospitals to dilute indoor air with fresh air.
Freeze Stat:
AHUs have a freeze stat to protect against freezing when outdoor air temperatures drop below 36°F. It stops the coil function to prevent freezing.
Chilled Water Coils:
Inside the AHU, a chilled water coil replaces the evaporator coil. A blower pushes air across the coil, absorbing heat and distributing air throughout the building.
Chilled water is more economical and safer than refrigerant, making AHUs ideal for hospitals and large office buildings.
