Process:
Use the timing method to measure gas consumption by clocking the gas meter.
Ensure only the target appliance is running (turn off other gas appliances).
Time one full revolution of the meter’s service dial using a stopwatch.
Note the time taken for a complete revolution.
Formulas for Gas Consumption:
For 1/2 cubic foot dial:
Formula: 1800 ÷ (time in seconds)
For 1 cubic foot dial:
Formula: 3600 ÷ (time in seconds)
BTU Conversion:
Multiply cubic feet of gas consumed per hour by the BTU value per cubic foot (approx. 1000 BTUs).
Example:
Time for 1 revolution = 24 seconds (for a 1/2 cubic foot dial).
Calculation: 1800 ÷ 24 = 75 cubic feet per hour.
BTU consumption: 75 cubic feet × 1000 BTUs = 75,000 BTUs/hour.
