Grills, Registers, and Diffusers (GDS):
GDS help move air into and out of occupied spaces.
Grills: Typically used for return air ducts, they are stamped metal with fins set at a 30-degree angle. The position of the grill doesn’t affect airflow but is often adjusted for aesthetic purposes.
Grills are larger than the duct opening and secured to the wall or ceiling.
Return grills can hold a filter, known as a return air filter grill, which can be easily forgotten and should be checked for replacement.
Supply Registers and Diffusers:
Registers: Supply covers that include a damper to adjust airflow.
Floor Registers: Come in drop-in styles, often stamped metal and brown, and fit snugly into a register boot.
Registers do not include screws, as they need to fit flush with the floor, ceiling, or wall.
The damper is controlled by a recessed wheel or lever.
Diffusers: Direct airflow in 2, 3, or 4 directions and are often used in ceiling applications to ensure even mixing of air in the room.
Typically installed near doors and windows to mix supply air with infiltrating air.
Air Filtration:
Air filtration is crucial to protecting HVAC equipment and improving indoor air quality.
Minimum requirement: a 1-inch air filter before air enters the HVAC system.
Return Air Packages: Include a slot for a 1-inch filter, often located at the bottom elbow of the return duct.
Filter Cabinets: Installed directly on the side or bottom of HVAC equipment, designed to hold larger 4-inch or 5-inch filters that last longer and capture smaller particles.
