Plenum System Layout (Radial System Layout):
Suitable for systems where room outlets are close to the unit.
Includes a pressurized plenum with branch runs extending to exterior walls.
Branch runs connect directly to the plenum, varying in size based on airflow needs.
Typically installed in attics with a central return.
Commonly uses metal or fiberglass for the plenum and flexible duct for the branches.
More affordable, labor-saving, and easier to install in new construction.
Extended Plenum System:
Works better with fossil fuel systems due to higher air temperature.
Extended plenum, known as trunk line, can be round, square, or rectangular, and is used to supply distant registers.
Effective for systems with fewer branch runs and trunk lines under 20 feet.
Reducing Extended Plenum System:
Features a pressurized supply plenum with transition takeoffs.
The trunk line is reduced after three to four branch runs to maintain static pressure.
Return air is ducted similarly, with larger ducts closer to the equipment.
Central return duct may be used, but separate returns for all living spaces ensure balanced airflow.
Perimeter Duct System:
A loop runs around the home's perimeter, providing consistent static pressure.
Suited for underground applications, often using thin-walled PVC or galvanized spiral duct.
Openings extend through the floor into each room, with a central return duct.
Dampers:
Installed to balance airflow to registers and diffusers.
Parallel to the duct indicates fully open, perpendicular means fully closed.
Locking nut allows for airflow adjustments.
